My New Favorite Sandwich

One of the most common postcards in Israel is of a large falafel sandwich and the title “Israel’s National Snack.” It is true that this chick pea sandwich is sold all over Israel and abroad, but in my humble opinion, there are other sandwiches that are equally as tasty and should be recognized.

Down the street from my apartment is a sandwich stand that only sells one thing: Sabich. With the wise guidance from some friends I have discovered this delicious sandwich that has been under my nose all this time. It is prepared much like falafel with pita and hummus, salad and tehina and ‘harif’ (spicy sauce for those of us who are daring). But instead of fried chick pea balls, Sabich is made with fried eggplant, hard boiled egg and potato. Any of you who have been out here to visit me can vouch for the fact that I always point out this sandwich place and usually take you there to eat as well.

I am not sure why Americans have not heard of this before, including me, until this year, but I promise you that if you are in Israel and get a Sabich sandwich, you will not be disappointed. Could this falafel rival become the new “Israeli National Sandwich?”

And while they are at it, I propose that Goldstar should be seriously considered to take over for Macabbi as “Israel’s National Beer.” It simply pains me to see tourists ordering Macabbi beer because they think it is the Israeli thing to do and then discover that it really is disgusting.

That sandwich sounds delicious - thanks for the tip! I'll be visiting Israel on a Birthright trip next winter, and will be sure to look for one while I'm there :)

Love reading your blog! Keep up that resolution!

I second that! Goldstar is much better then Macabbi. I have had many hangovers (un-regretted) due to crazy nights influenced by Goldstar. I can’t speak for the rest of Israel, but the kibbutz volunteers definitely preferred it above all else. Oh, and that sandwich (Sabich) sounds good too.
