Oh To Be Unemployed

Unemployment does not agree with me. In the month since I have returned from Southeast Asia I have been relatively busy. At first there was the initial shock of returning home, the numerous Jewish holidays, and of course sampling the best of Israeli cuisine. Now many of those activities are over and I am left looking for a job. While some envy me for being unemployed and free to do other things, I am focused on getting a job and getting back to my busy self.
Of course this begs the question that everyone loves to ask: “what kind of job are you looking for?” I could tell you I want to work in tourism, in aliyah or in the government. While that might be true, I am actually not that picky. Basically anything that lets me use my brain and doesn't have me sitting in front of a desk 100% of the time would be a possibility.
One of the aspects of Israel that never ceases to amaze me is the willingness of people to help; all you have to do is ask. I think I must have sent my resume to roughly half the country asking if they have heard of anything. Some people I haven’t spoken to in years, but regardless of past communications everyone wants to help.
The other side of this coin is collecting unemployment. Every week I go to the unemployment office, enter my ID number and my finger print into the computer system. If there is a picture of a house then I go home. If there is a picture of a person behind a desk then I have the pleasure of going upstairs to see what fun and interesting prospective job they have found for me. Along the way I encounter many colorful people and by the time I leave that office I am more determined than ever to find work.
Continuing in my efforts to find a job, I now pose the question to you- If you know of any organizations that are looking for an organized woman who speaks Hebrew and English and has first-hand knowledge of the American Jewish Community then please let me know.
In the meantime I will try to take some lessons from my husband who can appreciate the joys of unemployment with a good TV show or computer game…or maybe I will just go to the gym some more.

At the end of the day every person is alone. But there are two attitudes one can have to his loneliness. He can either experience it as misery, something to escape from by constantly distracting himself with social interactions. Or he can relish it as a special gift and opportunity for him to develop his own space and his relationship with G-d who is always there with him.
