"Saya bicara bahasa indonesia sedikit." Translation- I speak a little Indonesian.

Bahasa Indonesia is the official language of Indonesia. With over 300 native dialects among the 240+ million people, Indonesia had to construct a relatively easy language to unify the people quickly. Bahasa Indonesia relays heavily on Malay and also incorporates words from other languages whose countries have had influence over the years, including Arabic, Chinese, Dutch and English. It has no tenses and is not tonal (like Thai and Vietnamese).
Since Ariel and I are planning on sticking around for more than a week or two we decided to try and tackle this language. People have been very patient and receptive to us. While getting the words out can be pretty easy, understanding their answers is another challenge. When in doubt I just smile...and they smile...and it seems to work out.
Here is a sample for you:
Selamat pagi. Nama saya Leora dan saya orang Amerika. Umur saya 27 tahun. Saya sudah menikah, sauamiku namanya Ariel. Kami belum punya anak. Saya sudah dua minggu di Indonesia. Hari ini saya di Ubud dan besok kami akan pergi ke Bali timur.
Saya suka makanan indonesia. Saya suka sate ayam dan gado-gado. Orang Indonesia suka minum teh panas dengan banyak gula. Saya suka indonesia karena orang Indonesia ramah.
English translation:
Good morning. My name is Leora and I am from America. I am 27 years old. I am married already, my husbands name is Ariel, but I do not yet have children. I have been in Indonesia for 2 weeks so far. Today I am staying in Ubud and tomorrow I will go to East Bali.
I like Indonesian food. I love "sate ayam" (grilled ckicken kabab dipped in peanut sauce) and "gado gado" (another peanut based dish). Indonesian people drink hot tea with sugar a lot. I like Indoneisa because the people are friendly.
Ok, so I may sound like a 1st grader but it does the trick.
"Terima kasih dan sampai bertemu lagi,"= thanks and until we meet again.
