Being Israeli is Not Easy
Being Israeli is not easy, especially in the wake of the flotilla fiasco. We (Israelis) knew before the boats left the docks that the international community would have a field-day portraying Israel yet again as the aggressor and the Palestinians as the poor, unfortunate souls.
Then the two sides met and the outcome was so much worse than imagined.
Monday was a hard day for Israelis as we listened to the news unfolding but heard no timely official Israeli comment. How many times with Israeli's hasbara (propaganda or explanation of the situation) be too little, too late?
Watching the news that night and seeing what those Israeli soldiers endured as they landed on the boat was heart-breaking. Then hearing about the extensive medical aid that both sides received was even more frustrating. And of course the world goes straight to judge us.
Many citizens agreed that this action had to be taken, but at the same time we think what could have been if: If the intelligence had been better? If Israel made a public announcement immediately following the early morning bombardment? If Israel had filmed all of the steps she took to stop the ships from coming?
Monday's events were trying for Israel and her citizens. We continue to be constantly scrutinized, tested and criticized for our actions.
With all of the sadness and frustration and comments to digest, it may not be easy being Israeli, but it is definitely worth it.
