In The Neighborhood

One of the biggest perks of living in Israel is being able to see so many people who happen to come to Israel for one reason or another. Who would have thought that if I move across the ocean, I would have a chance to spend time with people who otherwise would not be in my neighborhood (especially in during the wintry Boston months)? People come for weddings and conventions, they are here for a week or two on a family trip or on Birthright, and sometimes they are even staffing these trips. Such people include former colleagues, friends from High school and even my dentist! No one ever has a lot of time, but it is always exciting to see someone from my “old life.” For the most part everyone is in a good mood; even if they are not on vacation, just being in Israel gives them break from their routine.
I will admit that catching up on all of the gossip and news from whatever part of my life each person is related to does make me nostalgic, but having them see me in my “new life” also reassures me that this is right for me. And at the end of the coffee, dinner or afternoon on the beach when we must part, there is always a moment when they realize that their time in Israel is limited and they must soon return to the States. While I would be lying if I did not tell you that I get pangs of longing now and again, I am always excited to go back to my apartment and continue living here.
For any of you who are contemplating a trip to the holy land, know that you always have a futon to sleep on or at the very least a cup of coffee. Come and visit!
