Leora studies Torah
If someone would have told me that I would be studying Torah voluntarily at age 24, I never would have believed it. But alas, it is true. No, I did not go to Thailand, walk into Chabad and become religious. I did, however, change ulpan classes.
Despite the fact that my teacher’s name is Leora and she is very sweet, the class was too slow for me and too crowded. I decided to change to the evening ulpan, which is about half the number of students and moves twice as fast. The class meets twice a week and is split into four sections:
1- grammer
2- reading texts and newspapers
3- writing
4- Torah (well really Tanach)
So there I am sitting in class and the teacher asked the class what the first sentence of the Torah says. I found myself raising my hand and recited the first sentence flawlessly. All of the sudden I had flashbacks from my days at Solomon Schechter. The class was actually very interesting. Unlike learning Torah in a religious institution, in the ulpan you study Torah from a language perspective. I learned grammar rules that I will not bore everyone with, but if you are interested I am happy to let you partake in my knowledge.
I guess all of those years at Solomon Schechter Day School actually paid off!
